Look on your local craigslist under gigs, modeling or sales jobs for marketing opportunities. You are looking for real live jobs done in stores handing out samples, greeting customers, or promoting a product. These jobs pay between $8 and $20+ an hour. Mine have averaged $15/hr.

Your headshot doesn't have to be professional like this one, but it should be clear and well lit.
Once you have found a company listing a job in your area research the company to make sure it is legitimate, then reply to the posting with your resume. It's also helpful to send a clear headshot photograph with the email as you will be representing the company. State your interest in the position and why you think you would be a good candidate.

When you get a response by email or phone, be sure to be professional and upbeat. These companies tend to look for outgoing, friendly people. I try to focus on speaking loud and clear, and smiling while I talk on the phone so that it comes through in my tone.

Make sure to be prompt in responding and filling out any applications. Responsibility and punctuality are of the utmost importance, because you will not have someone overseeing your work. Make sure to fill out a W9 if it will be a one-time job or a W4 if you will work regularly for the company.

Be sure to show up to the job on time and promote the product or business to the best of your ability. These jobs are almost always secret shopped by a member of the company to make sure you are doing what you're supposed to. Don't leave early or take a long lunch. Be sure to stay off your phone and interact with each customer. Wrap up and get all forms signed and stamped by appropriate management and call in completion if required.

Congratulations! You did your first marketing job. Now you can look for more or ask the company you worked for about more opportunities in your area while you wait on that first check. Opportunities are endless for responsible people.

Tips & Warnings

  • Smile smile smile. When doing a promotion job, you are the face of the company. If you want to get hired back, you need to please customers.
  • Another place to look for marketing jobs is monster.com.
  • Be on time! It means everything to be on time or a bit early. The managers looking for people to do these jobs need someone they can count on to show up and be on time.
  • There are many scams out there when it comes to working for yourself. Make sure you research the company and speak to the HR Manager about all the appropriate forms. If they say you don't need to fill out a W4 or W9 walk away.
  • If the job looks like it pays too much be careful. My best paying jobs paid $18/hr or $200/day.
  • As always, if your instincts tell you there's something wrong, there probably is.
